What qualifications or training do I need to become a professional Dog Groomer?
No official qualifications are needed to start on any of the courses. You will be required to complete theory work online. Support from your tutor will be given.
How long does it take to complete a dog grooming training program?
We suggest that you book onto one of our Taster Sessions to discuss the course and to have hands on experience with helping a groomer. This is for you to decide if one of our courses is right for you, this is not compulsory and you can book without attending a Taster Day.
Our Courses are either 5 days, 15 days or 30 days, with additional time be needed to complete some of the theory work at home.
Our Canine First Aid or Level 3 Handstripping are One Day sessions.
Are there different levels of dog grooming certifications?
At Dog-a-holic all of our courses are Level 3 (you do not need to be Level 2 trained, you can go straight for Level 3) and we offer different courses from an introduction to Dog Grooming to a full Diploma. We have stand-alone Canine First Aid courses and a Fast Track Diploma for people that are already grooming but would like to have a qualification. We also have a Handstripping stand-alone qualification.
What are the key skills and attributes of a successful dog groomer?
Firstly, a love of dogs is a must!
Dog groomers come from all walks of life, from younger people looking to start a new career as a dog groomer, to others who may be fed up with their 9 to 5 and looking to retrain in a rewarding new career.
As long as you are hard working and driven, with a passion to listen and learn you will have the skills to become a fully trained dog groomer.
Do I need previous experience working with animals to become a dog groomer?
No experience is necessary.
Can I learn dog grooming techniques on my own, or is formal training necessary?
Learning to groom is practical and remember you are working with animals so being trained correctly will avoid accidents.
What are the benefits of attending a dog grooming school versus learning on the job?
You will gain a recognised qualification to a Level 3 standard. This will show your customers that you are fully qualified and have been assessed. You will train in an environment that is at your pace but will also allow you to see how a live dog groomer operates. Attending Dog-A-Holic Grooming Academy allows you to fit this in with your current commitments. It gives you the opportunity to decide whether to work for yourself or to gain employment.
Are there any age restrictions to become a professional dog groomer?
You have to be aged over 16.
What are the costs associated with dog grooming training?

Are there any financial aid options available for dog grooming courses?
Is there a demand for professional dog groomers in the job market?
Absolutely – the demand for Qualified Dog Groomers has never been greater, even in areas where there are currently Dog Groomers; many close their books to new customers as they are fully booked. This occupation gives you the freedom to work for yourself or to become employed.
Can I specialise in grooming specific dog breeds?
Once qualified you can cater your grooming to an area that suits you.
How do I handle difficult or aggressive dogs during the grooming process?
During your training you will be taught how to deal with different temperaments.
Are there any health and safety considerations for dog groomers?
What types of tools and equipment are essential for a professional dog groomer?
All the equipment will be provided for you to complete your course. The Certificate and Diploma courses currently come with a starter kit.
Do dog groomers need to have knowledge of dog anatomy and behaviour?

The opportunities and career growth are relative to what you would like to achieve. There are the options to be creative groomers, home groomers, small business owners to compete in competitions.
Can I work as a freelance dog groomer or do I need to be employed by a salon?

100%, you can actually start setting up during your training if you feel confident to do so.

All topics will be discussed during training and how to deal with challenges and difficulties.
How do I handle grooming requests from pet owners with specific preferences?
Be honest and if what they are requesting is unachievable because of either the dog, the dog’s coat condition or your ability, then explain why you may not be the right groomer for them. Educating an owner on how to look after their dog’s coat is just as important as grooming the dog.
Can I offer additional services such as nail trimming or teeth cleaning as a dog groomer?
Definitely, you can offer your services as a dog groomer on what you feel you are happy with. Nail trims should be part of a groom but can also offer a stand-alone service. Teeth cleaning is a great option as it is part of canine care but this is down to each individual groomer and whether they want to offer this service.

The animal welfare act ensures that needs are met for all dogs. There are also individual considerations that you will need to deal with during your time as a groomer, these will be covered in your training.
Can I groom other types of animals, such as cats or small mammals?
What are the rewards and satisfactions of working as a professional dog groomer?
The first is working with animals and their owners, ensuring that their coats, skin and nails are the best they can be, transforming them to look fabulous and smelling fresh and clean. You can work on a one-to-one basis or part of a group, you can be self-employed, run a small business, run multiple shops or go and seek employment, or perhaps a combination of both. You can set up a business from home or take the plunge with a commercial property. There are no boundaries with Dog Grooming; it can be as small or as big as you wish. The skills and qualifications you will gain are transferable and you can take them to any Town, City, County or Country, you can groom anywhere in the world.
